[16:39] Join: Fluffy joined #corewars [16:39] :) [16:40] greets fluffy [16:40] how's the patch business going? [16:40] I knew, that you would ask that. I'm already downloading all new patches. One moment [16:41] downloading? uploading? [16:41] please clarify! [16:41] I'm downloading the data, that you all have created [16:42] 2553 complete patches, bvowk - 952 patches, brx - 947 patches, Sascha - 383 patches, Fluffy - 193 patches, Roy - 78 patches [16:43] Tomorrow I'll probably upload new score surfaces (images + data) to my homepage [16:43] hrm.. brx gave up.. [16:43] :-( [16:43] I believe I stopped yesterday morning because I needed the cpu for something else [16:43] I think, that he could have made it, if he didn't [16:43] got the exmars patch? [16:44] Yes, seems to work :) [16:44] fluffy: yeah, I was pretty sure I wasn't going to catch up in time.. [16:45] You can't imagine how feel now. No more noise ... now I have an almost completely silent computer [16:45] and all because I finally decided, that it is time to buy new fans [16:45] heh [16:45] yeah, I've upgraded both my home and my work boxes to be pretty much silent too.. [16:45] its quite a feeling isn't it? :) [16:45] like a big pressure just stopped [16:46] Now I only need that new keyboard [16:46] but 280 Euro is quite expensive :( [16:47] Unfortunately I can't find it on my "pile" [16:48] ;-) [16:48] the kinesis? [16:48] yes [16:48] yeah.. worth every penny tho [16:48] I've found a german dealer, who has it with a german layout [16:48] ahh.. I forgot you'd have to type some crazy moon speak. [16:49] * bvowk ducks. [16:49] hehe [16:49] bbiaw. [16:49] ok [16:49] brx: how is anne and eve? [16:50] anne died, eve is resting while I hack stumpwm [16:51] "A window manager written entirely in Common Lisp" ... oh boy [16:51] But I'm probably not better either ... I use evilwm [16:51] Fluffy: its author is actually the guy who wrote ratpoison [16:51] stumpwm is more or less a ratpoison written in common lisp. [16:52] in it, I am currently running (this) irssi and an emacs session connected to an exterior lisp process running the wm [16:53] Hey, thanks for reminding me ... now I've remembered, what I stil have to install :) [16:53] so when I recompile parts of the code, it directly affects this wm session [16:56] kinesis? [16:56] http://www.kinesis-ergo.com/ [16:57] I've seen the keyboard, that bvowk uses for his 3jane and I instantly fell in love. [16:57] Now I've even found a german dealer [16:57] hm [16:57] I like my standard keyboard [16:58] http://www.kinesis-ergo.com/elan.htm [16:58] fiveop: You won't like your standard keyboard, if you do a lot of typing [16:59] Several years ago I've switched to one of those "natural" keyboards it felt like heaven compared to the standard ones [17:01] if you are a touch typist, bad keyboards really get to you. [17:01] my non-dvorak typing is mainly arm movement so I couldn't care less for the type of keyboard I use then [17:03] (mainly arm movement means that my fingers only press/release keys, they don't move left/right/forward/backward) [17:03] *individually [17:03] I've already considered several times to switch to dvorak, but unfortunately I have to type on other peoples keyboards that often, I can't switch :-( [17:04] I fear, that might be a little bit difficult to switch between the two systems [17:04] Fluffy: it is no problem to switch often after you have learned dvorak. [17:04] but learning dvorak will take longer. [17:04] brx: Are you sure? [17:04] yes. [17:04] one will become your first nature. but second nature is not too bad either, no? [17:04] ;-) [17:06] it's no problem because your fingers remember not only the grand picture but the context of specific movements. the first few keypresses when switching will require a little conscious effort, afterwards you forget about it and it just works. [17:07] And how good are you at type dvorak? [17:07] *typing [17:08] about as good as qwert(y|z), not really better. [17:08] I'm typing qwerty-us (with capslock as modyfier for Ä ü etc) blind [17:08] fiveop: you don't need to be a touch typist to type blindly. [17:08] hm [17:09] but if you are a touch typist, dvorak will make you move your fingers much less when typing english [17:09] hm [17:09] I think I'm a touch typist [17:09] If I look at my fingers typing [17:09] currently I am typing qwertz blindly. and I am not touchtyping [17:09] it's mostly finger movement with some slight wrist movement [17:10] fiveop: you will notice that when typing english in dvorak, you will be able to write whole sentences without leaving the homerow. [17:11] * Fluffy is away for a while ... [17:20] hrm. [17:32] * Fluffy is back :) [17:37] Join: Nenad joined #corewars [17:46] MSG: Ping timeout: 252 seconds [17:49] MSG: Quit: dat # 1, < 1 [18:12] Join: Roy joined #corewars [18:12] Hi all [18:13] hey. [18:13] brx: any thoughts on my laptop (yesterdays logs) [18:14] Roy: I have not read the logs, what happened? [18:14] Just open it :P its <1k [18:15] http://www.koth.org/irc-logs/2006-02-28.txt [18:15] Saves me copying a few lines [18:16] Roy: has your lappy become incredibly silent over the past few days? :) [18:16] * brx has no idea. bvowk probably has a few. [18:16] it's underclocked! [18:16] silent.. just sloowwww [18:17] like me desktop cpu [18:17] Roy: maybe your fan broke is what I meant to say. [18:17] cpu got too hot, shut down, cooled down, now runs on slower speed [18:17] s/on/with [18:18] whats this roy? [18:20] No, the fan is working fine.. [18:20] what is your notebook roy? p3? p3M? p4M? AMD? [18:20] And it isn't a software problem either, P4M [18:20] I tried it with a knoppix cd, same slowness... [18:21] recently drop it? [18:21] the fan still spins up properly when it gets warm and then slows down? [18:21] Nope, it was crunshing numbers (searching primes) and just stopped.. [18:21] Yup, that still works fine [18:22] do you know what the idle and working temps are? [18:22] No idea.. [18:22] well.. I've seen something like that before.. [18:23] But when working (now) just chatting on irc, nothing else it doesn't even start the fan, temp is fine... [18:23] what happened was they'd dropped the notebook, and the heatsink wasn't making very effective contact with the cpu anymore... so it couldn't keep the cpu cool enough to get it out of half speed mode [18:23] but it could keep it cool enough that it wouldn't crash.. [18:24] hmm.. that could be it but I don't recall it falling or anything, heck I don't think it moved at all for about two months now :) [18:25] ok.. [18:25] and its plugged in all the time/ [18:25] yeah, the batt died.. :-( [18:25] ok.. and it knows its plugged in? [18:25] yup [18:26] ok.. [18:26] did your bios settings get reset when it failed to boot suddenly? [18:26] (or corrupted) [18:26] Don't think so [18:26] you could try resetting all the defaults and then making your changes again to be sure.. [18:27] it might not be immediately obvious that the settings are corrupt just by looking at the screens [18:27] if that doesn't help.. I'm kinda out of ideas.. [18:27] Heh, thanks anyway, this is much more helpful then anything I found before :) [18:28] that'd be my usual trouble shooting tree, temp, stuck on battery mode, corrupt apm settings keeping you in heavy power saver mode [18:28] what we learn is ... don't crunsh numbers on a laptop that hasn't ever fallen to the ground [18:28] I'm going to reset everything soon anyway, clearing my whole pc and start over again [18:28] hey roy.. when you started up knoppix, did you cold boot the system or just reboot? [18:28] fiveop: and don't even start crunching [18:29] laptops apm/acpi crud is pretty finiky about cold/warm boots.. [18:29] I think I reboot it, so setting could be left untouched.. [18:29] try leaving it off for a couple minutes and then booting into knoppix without loading windows.. [18:30] windows might have corrupted the acpi settings, and they'll sometimes live across reboots.. (which is terrifically annoying! and causes some very difficult to debug issues) [18:31] Well, I might clear everything and install linux on it anyway, maybe that'll help... or Vista if they come with a crack soon ;-) [18:31] heh.. [18:31] I hope the rumours are true and vista will move the graphics code out of ring 0 [18:31] that'd be nice. [18:32] you might be able to make it a couple days without getting holed that way. [18:32] roy: freebsd :) [18:32] Yeah, they say Vista isn't as bad as most Windows versions are, lot of people are cheering about the features it 'might' have [18:32] its still windows tho.. [18:33] They stopped trying to be backwards compatible with most systems, thats a good thing [18:33] for it to stay windows, your old apps have to work, which means the old legacy holes have to stay for the most part.. [18:33] if they drop anything <2k it won't be so bad.. [18:34] it'll still be windows.. the only platform where bragging that you've got 10M lines of new code in a release is a feature and not a warning label. [18:35] lol [18:37] Well, its a good thing they are finally fixing the heap fragmentation [18:37] roy: you should really run FreeBSD 6.1-BETA, its not bad. [18:37] yes.. they'll be catching up to the late 1990's [18:38] er.. [18:38] bbiaw. [18:39] Sigh, but the names, it'll never do well according to Fluffy's theory, calling a memory preloader "SuperFetch"... [18:40] Roy: don't try freebsd.. [18:40] Roy: stick with linux [18:40] roy: run freebsd, and then run linux inside a tiny little jail where it belongs. [18:41] * Roy is going to run JOS [18:41] The one and only Java Operating System! [18:42] you're sick. [18:43] nice. [18:43] fixed the three most annoying things in stumpwm [18:43] overlapping windows, windows keeping focus even after a frame switch, window pulling [18:47] http://solace.is-a-geek.org/stumpwm2.png [18:49] pfft.. "Microsoft will introduce a search engine better than Google in six months in the United States and Britain followed by Europe, its European president said on Wednesday. " [18:49] They say (themselfs) its TWICE as 'good' as google.. [18:51] how do they measure their ... 'goodness" :P [18:51] Nooo idea.. wondering about that [18:53] I have an idea... [18:53] and it is scary :) [18:53] they are indexing all windows users' files :) [18:55] Heh, google has some scary shit too, they save all queries, and as almost all websites have some form of adsense they can track your every movement, and by retrieving the referral they can even find sites you visited before! [18:55] Saving that with the cookie you have...that doens't self-delete for about 40 years or something [18:56] you could configure your browser so they can't track all that :P [18:56] fiveop: who cares [18:56] Roy obviously if he finds it scary [18:56] deems [18:56] Yeah, what do they want to do with it... the only thing it might be usefull for [18:56] -finds [18:56] hum [18:56] ... [18:57] is showing you relevant information based on visits you make [18:57] and people who don't get tracked get random ads etc... [18:59] Hehehe, a dutch television company got sued and lost, and they are happy about it [19:00] explain [19:03] They wanted to make a program: Pimp my Life [19:03] Picking a bum from the street, pimping him, giving him a good life [19:04] But it was being made by a very religieus channel...they found out after a while what the word 'Pimp' means [19:06] But MTV sued them, now (luckely for them) they can't use "Pimp my" [19:07] Join: Nenad joined #corewars [19:15] MSG: [19:27] Sigh, if only I had more time and could program better.. [19:29] I wonder if its possible.. [19:29] if you program better, it takes less time :) [19:29] You have a algorithm to nullify sound by producing anti-sound [19:30] My laptop has both a mic and speakers.. so it can listen and produce anti-sound [19:30] The only problem is time, it'll run out of sync, by the time it heard something the sound is gone, so it would need some form of prediction [19:31] Using a algorithm you could predict what sound is comming, and nullify it [19:31] That would eleminate the annoying sounds like the spinning of fans etc because they stay the same! [19:33] Something to think about... :-) [19:33] * Roy has to go! [23:43] starting with t20 i think they come with an embedded security chip [23:43] with t41 active protection system [23:43] t41? [23:43] t43 I believe, fingerprint reader [23:43] ah! [23:43] some at least [23:44] I will buy a used one [23:44] and an old one :) [23:45] a new t series notebook will cost me 1300$ at the very least. [23:45] and that's with 256 mb ram. [23:45] yes [23:46] with sxga+ screen and 512mb ram etc etc it will probably be ~2k [23:46] Is it worth that price? [23:47] bvowk thinks it is. many people do.
