[05:28] Nevermind [05:28] Welcome to corewar [05:29] Thanks. :D [05:35] Where ya from [05:35] Earth. [05:35] LIES [05:36] So anyway, I have a question. [05:36] Is there a DOS MARS that has an option of outputting the scores to a file? [05:40] * Velma pokes datagram. [05:40] Uh [05:40] pmars.exe > scorefile.txt [05:40] pMARS can do that? I guess I should've read the readme file a little more closely. [05:41] Thank thee, kind vassal. [05:45] No no [05:46] You can do that in any command line [05:46] > takes output and redirects it to a file [05:46] >> will append, too [05:46] > will overwrite the file [05:46] Awesome, thanks. There's so much I don't know about DOS. [05:50] Join: fiveop joined #corewars [05:50] Heh [05:50] I have uber dos hacks up my sleeve [05:51] I wanna write an evolver, do you think a CompactFlash card would be an effective medium to save wear and tear on a hard disk? [05:52] Why would it be hard on the hard disk? [05:52] You can technically do it all in memory [05:52] I don't know how to set up a ramdisk. :[ [05:57] Join: fiveop_ joined #corewars [06:01] MSG: Ping timeout: 252 seconds [06:07] Did you know that some people are born with right-side hearts? [06:15] It happens [06:15] some people have 2 cocks [06:15] 3, if you're lucky [06:17] I dunno if you could say that such a person is lucky [06:22] o_o [06:22] Nobody has two cocks. :| [06:22] So anyway, datagram. What would you suggest for writing an evolver? :3 [06:23] language-wise? [06:23] C/C++ [06:23] No, algorithm-wise. [06:24] Like, what do you think would be an effective mutation rate/method? [06:32] Well, cw is easy in that fitness = score [06:32] or win/lose [06:33] Yuh, I kinda figured that. :p [06:35] I don't write much evolution stuff [06:35] Talk to bvowk [06:35] I understand it, but never got overly interested in it : ) [06:35] whois bvowk [06:35] Crap! [06:35] I keep forgetting the slash. >.< [06:36] Heh [06:36] I thought it was a question [06:36] I'm used to playing MUCKs, see. [06:37] I see [06:38] I've been reading a bunch of articles about it. Some suggest using benchmark warriors, but I don't really agree with that. [06:40] Doesn't seem very ideal from an evolutionary standpoint. [06:43] It makes sense [06:43] If you just start with all random warriors [06:43] They will only be better than other random warriors [06:44] but might get their shit ruined by standard crappy (human made) warriors [06:46] There's the crux of the problem. The challenge is to create a warrior through random alterations to randomly generated code that can compete with hand-written warriors. [06:46] If you use hand-written benchmark warriors to aid in their evolution, then a higher power has influenced the evolution and it's not truly random. [06:47] You might get better results, but it's not really the same. :p [06:48] It might take months to evolve a warrior that can hold its own on a hill, but nobody ever said evolution was a quick and clean process, eh? [06:53] Anyway, we didn't evolve from single-celled organisms that aspired to be multicellular and bipedal. Likewise, an evolved warrior shouldn't aspire toward the standards of a benchmark. [06:57] * Velma pokes datagram. [06:57] Am I boring you? :( [06:58] I am in the middle of a major dump [06:58] Give me like 20 minutes [06:58] Kay. [06:59] Dump? As in, like, a bathroom thing? [07:02] Yep [07:16] But then again, what is the point of evolving warriors? The reach hill? Just to see what it can brew up? For new ideas? [07:18] hi Mizcu [07:18] hi data [07:25] And about effective mutation methods/rates, thats the question everyone aspires to answer. [07:26] Bvowk's evolver uses self-changing rate depending on how each evolver has been doing. [07:27] And about methods, there are really only 3. Add/remove instruction, change instruction and/or something in it, Swap instructions. [07:28] "Mating" between two warriors can be either disaster or a working concept, depending on what you are creating [07:28] For nano-hill it might work, while on big hills it is useless. [07:29] Evolved Warriors are not built on progressing between different types of action, so trying to swap between action-components wont work [07:30] Though both Bvowk's and Wills evolvers are able to notice metagenes(superblocks) and use them on evolving. [07:31] Difference being that Will's evolver sucks, and Bvowk's works when given enough processing power. [07:40] Bvowk's evolver uses self-changing rate depending on how each evolver has been doing. [07:40] Interesting! [07:40] So it's an evolving evolver. [07:41] I wouldnt go that far saying so [07:42] Well it's a neat idea, anyway. [07:42] Even getting the self-change's numbers good will be quite a fight [07:43] It reminds me of a story by Isaac Asimov, Stranger In Paradise. [07:43] Too little mutations and there will be only minor changes, too many and the warrior will devolve into a pile of trash. [07:44] They're not "only minor changes," Mizcu. Those "only minor changes" have given us Shakespeare and Beethoven. [07:44] And Hitler. [07:45] ... [07:45] So, who's seen Silent Hill? [07:46] What's that ... for? :( [07:47] I was about to reply but them thought a bit more [07:49] A minor change rarely does anything when the main warrior is crap, but while the main warrior is capable then minor changes will be crucial. [07:50] While a stone's bombing pattern can be ruined by a change of one number by one, a paper's pattern doesnt care unless it has been fully optimized before. [07:58] please, do ask if you have questions [07:58] i am the unofficial newbie-guide here [07:58] I'm the official spirit-breaker [07:58] : ) [07:59] data, isnt it bed-time for you already? [08:02] So anyway, how 'bout that Silent Hill movie? [08:02] Dont really care myself about it [08:02] :/ [08:03] I dont really even watch movies nowadays [08:19] Mizcu, In...7 hours [08:21] Nick Change: Velma changed nick to Miss_Meow [08:21] Velma, I'm looking for the ps2 game [08:21] Eh? [08:21] You mean Silent Hill 2 or 3 or what? [08:21] 1 [08:21] There's a Silent Hill 1 for PS2? [08:22] I thought it was PSX only. They ported it to the PS2? Why? o_o [08:22] I meant 1 [08:22] silent hill1 for ps1 [08:22] But you can play any ps1 game on ps2.. [08:22] so...yeah [08:22] Oh, okay. [08:25] Mega Man X6 has like, the shittiest translation ever. [08:30] hmm [08:30] should i install MMX6 or not [08:30] or should i go play ET or RCT2 [08:31] Define said acronyms [08:31] I've played nearly every MM and MMX, but not yet 6.. [08:32] ET = Enemy territory, RCT2 = Rollercoaster tycoon 2 [08:32] Or maybe Dead of Alive 3.. [08:33] DOA it is then [08:34] Ah [08:34] as i can play it and follow IRC [08:50] Did you like Mega Man X5? [08:50] More than X3 [08:50] Everyone says X6 is the hardest one, but I still think X3's the hardest. [08:51] Mostly though because of Zero's Badass-ness [08:51] I didn't like how you could switch between X and Zero, I preferred X4's system of picking one and sticking with him. [08:51] In X5 there's really no incentive to start with Zero, because you don't get Fourth Armor if you do. [08:52] If i had to play X5 on real playstation, i would have never finished the game, the damn last level were a challenge even with savestates [08:52] I think the only megaman I actually played was megaman legends for ps1 [08:52] That's a fun game. Pretty easy, though. [08:53] have you watched the MM-done-quick vid's? [08:53] You mean like speedruns? [08:53] y [08:54] Yeah. [08:54] Almost cried when i saw MM2-speedrun for first time [08:54] Abuse upon abuse [08:55] Hehe [08:55] brb [08:56] Dude, you should see some of the MM1 speedruns. [08:56] That game was pretty buggy, and people abuse the hell out of it. [08:56] For example, icing a boss with one shot by tapping select. [08:57] bisqwit.iki.fi [08:57] Done the pause-killing myself too on emulator [08:57] I'm not watching any speedruns, I'm on 112k. :/ [08:59] Mega Man X6 is insane. When you fight Sigma, he's just come back from within inches of death and it shows. [08:59] His dialogue is kinda incoherent, and he hobbles around like he's got a nasty hangover. [08:59] MMX just keeps/kept getting harder every game [09:00] And almost forced you to get the optimal weapons, while in MM-series you could beat pretty much every boss with buster and no tanks if you just spent little time with them [09:01] (Well, i have no idea how to beat Ring Man in MM4 with buster..) [09:01] Ring Man's a bastard, I hate him. [09:02] Has maybe the simplest pattern of them all but still so hard to defeat.. [09:02] The problem is he's very fast, and he jumps a lot. [09:02] Don't his rings also deflect shots? It's been a while since I've played that one. [09:03] Dont deflect [09:04] So anyway, don't listen to the bad stuff people say about X6. The translation sucks, but overall it's still a good game. [09:04] But if you play it, just expect to spend a -lot- of time on the last three levels. [09:05] High Max is a bitch to beat, Gate's pretty tough, and I think I spent about forty minutes chipping on Sigma. [09:06] Also, X6 is timed. I hate that in games. [09:06] It makes me feel like I've gotta rush through it and I can't just enjoy the game at my own pace. :( [09:09] Heh [09:09] I couldn't do that [09:09] I just leave the games on while I sleep so that if I want to play in the morning...I don [09:09] 't have to get up [09:12] scary, doggy sleeping in my bed, with only whites showing in eyes [09:13] heh [09:20] oh, i have to show pics of our dog to every newcomer ^.^ http://koti.mbnet.fi/mizcu/kuvat/ [09:24] Haha again [09:24] You know...when I was new you never showed me :( [09:24] you were too masculine to care about them [09:27] Haha [09:28] how many people have already registered? [09:28] 5 [09:29] I haven't sent out the email the anyone but r.g.c though [09:29] I have a bunch of friends who will be interested [09:29] I wanted to get the site done first [09:29] Which I shall work on now [09:30] But so far sf, chip, fluffy, mizcu, and elkauka [09:38] Does pycorewar have tournament capabilities yet? [09:38] gotta ask that from Floff [09:40] (hes gonna hurt me for refusing to say hes name correctly) [09:41] : ) [09:45] So anyway, what's a good ramdisk driver for Windows XP? [09:46] dunno, i've only used microsoft's sample driver [09:46] But that's for Windows 2000. :( [09:46] 2k trimphs again [09:47] * Miss_Meow bites Mizcu.
