[21:06] I'm just getting started with Corewars, seems like an interesting game [21:07] I'm trying out ARES [21:07] You might want to use corewin [21:07] www.geocities.com/corewin2/ [21:08] Ares is a nice project, but i cant really help you with using it [21:09] I believe you have read Ilmari's tutorial? [21:10] Or if you havent, you can find it in "guides" at corewar.info [21:10] hm [21:10] (www.corewar.info , that is) [21:11] You will most probably have lots of questions when reading it, so if you have problem with something, feel free to ask me [21:12] okay [21:12] And if nobody seems to be awake at the channel, write your question here anyway. Everything at this channel is logged at www.koth.org/irc-logs/ , and you can later look at the logs if someone has answered. [21:13] well, i'm also trying to get back into corewars - which tutorial is the best to start with? [21:13] I already know dwarf and imp, [21:13] I also know that I understood those adressing modes back when I first had contact with cw... [21:14] Re-read Ilmari's guide anyway [21:14] but this is about ~10 years [21:14] okay [21:14] I'll give it a try [21:14] and then read Morell's papers, you can find it also in corewar.info/beginner guides [21:14] when I found corewars on an amiga shareware-disk there was only the 88-standard... [21:14] Just amass as much as possible to read, and if you get stuck somewhere, start reading another article [21:15] How are "multiplayer" Corewars run? [21:15] hm, i'll take a look [21:15] sorry, have to leave...girlfriend wants to be taken home... [21:15] be back later [21:16] Cc: We have hills. These are automated servers where you send a warrior, and the warrior is fought against all other warriors at the hill (well, one server can have many hills with different settings), and if it has better scores than other warriors in the hill, weakest warrior is pushed off the hill. [21:17] www.koth.org and sal.math.ualberta.ca are the two highest trafficing places [21:18] ah [21:18] Winning gives 3 points, and Tie 1 for both. This can be changed of course, but all current hills use that scoring scheme. [21:19] You might notice that at the hills, scores are mentioned as %. This is because a lot more fights than just 100 are run to get more accurate results. [21:21] Starting positions in a fight are randomized, and because random doesnt always mean fair, a lot of fights are made. [21:25] MSG: Quit: humhum [21:26] sal also has beginner-hill where you can send your code without shame [21:27] Just dont send old warriors, or slightly modified versions of good warriors there [21:28] Join: Core29_ joined #corewars [21:28] And one more thing about the hills, whenever a new warrior enters a hill, all those surviving get one point of age. [21:29] Getting high age is just as big challenge as getting a warrior that scores well - only that you cannot predict the future challanges to the hill [21:29] MSG: Remote host closed the connection [21:30] MSG: Ping timeout: 252 seconds [21:36] hm [21:37] High score when entering the hill doesnt mean that it will survive long; Porch Swing entered with 15-point lead (some 11 years ago), and fell off soon after as rest of the hill was replaced with warriors that could resist it [21:37] But Son of Vain, current recordholder did enter with 10-point lead [21:48] Then of course, there is "Certain Abuse", but it was more of a exploit than a real warrior, so it doesnt count [21:59] (Awfully quiet again, i guess he is reading..)
