[11:07] And bits of my website are still being ripped off. [11:14] Right now I'm getting mardy about this. [11:14] If only people could write their own stuff instead of ripping off someone elses without even giving them credit. [11:15] MSG: Quit: Bersirc 2.2, for external use only. [13:44] unreleased [13:44] I think all on infi nano are release [13:45] i mean, lot of warriors that have been on sal-nano have been unreleased [13:45] Oh yes :) [13:45] especially those on s-nano currently (duh) [13:46] There are some exact dupes on Koenigstuhl (with different name / author!) [13:47] I've nearly got a new version of my site ready :) [13:48] Working on the menus [13:48] Then I'll put it online ready for everyone to rip off my content :( [13:48] * bvowk rips off sf's comment [13:49] * sf_ghoul rips off bvowk's eyebrows [13:49] ow. [13:49] thats maybe excessive don'tcha think? [13:49] No, it's a fair response [13:50] Why send a cease and desist order when I can just rip off your eyebrows ;) [13:50] ripping content, to what extend? [13:50] Portions of my text [13:51] i consider that just silly, but idiots are everywhere [13:52] I don't have a lot on my site but there's several descriptions to links which have been copied word for word [13:52] "specialises in facts, figures and statistics about Corewar compiled by John Metcalf. The Corewar Timeline, Who's Who, Nano page and Tiny page are also located here." [13:52] Write your own description people :( [13:56] "Here you will find a tutorial on quickscanners, the Score Surface Project and the Corewar Time Machine" [13:56] Grrr :( [13:57] * bvowk injects sf with a months supply of haldol to dull her murderous rage [13:57] My friend just arrived [13:57] * sf_ghoul waves [13:57] MSG: Quit: Bersirc 2.2: Looks, feels and sounds (?!) different! [14:53] sas eh? [14:53] i haven't ever competed [14:54] bvowk, any tips for a beginner? [14:55] well, I don't really do any redcoding.. I evolve redcode [14:55] but http://sfghoul.blogspot.com/ has a list of the top 10 resources for beginners [14:55] i've noticed that... in the nano hill newsletters [14:55] and mizcu is likely around :) [14:55] uh oh. [14:55] quite yes [14:56] I'm glad the nano newsletter brought someone new :) [14:56] ha ha [14:57] the best way to get started is to just .. start.. [14:57] it takes a couple seconds to send something to the hills [14:57] and there's quite a bit of published code, get a mars and walk through the existing warriors. [14:57] but I've got to be off! [14:58] how soon until you receive results from the hills? [14:58] depending on the hill, 30 seconds to 10 minutes [14:58] nano is pretty quick [14:58] the bigger hills take more time [14:59] the massive hill on sal can take *AGES* right now [15:02] sounds good! [15:18] quote: [15:18] The starting job code at my previous employer was "ARCH ASS" (Architecture Associate). [15:18] If you were really good you got promoted to "ARCH ANAL" (Architecture Analyst). [15:18] :endquote [15:18] that's great! [15:18] haha [15:32] hrm. [15:32] today is a very good day. [16:21] Join: sf_ghoul joined #corewars [16:22] Hi wOlfpak, new to corewar? [16:22] yep [16:22] :) [16:22] What're you doing at the moment? [16:22] Learning redcode? Or writing a few warriors? [16:23] learning redcode [16:23] :) [16:23] Where did you discover corewar? [16:24] programming.reddit.com - there's an article about it today [16:24] i figure I have some freetime... why not try it out? [16:24] hey. a fellow reddit'er [16:24] be careful w0lf, I started this like 10 years ago. [16:25] that good, eh? [16:26] might just be I'm that bad at it ;) [16:26] "that much fun, eh?" [16:26] The top 10 links corewar post did well on reddit [16:27] I quite enjoy it.. [16:27] I like the pear cider the sell :) [16:30] back later or tomorrow [16:30] Good luck wOlfpak [16:30] thanks [16:30] MSG: Quit: Bersirc 2.2: All the original sexiness of Bersirc, open to the world. [ http://www.bersirc.org/ - Open Source I [17:03] Join: Caelian joined #corewars [18:11] hey cael [18:19] does corewars make you a better programmer? [18:20] it certainly can't hurt. [18:20] seems to attact people who like math.. [18:38] moin bvowk [18:38] Finally internet at home again [18:41] you didn't have intarweb at home [18:44] i have another question about the corewar community... what kind of jobs do corewars programmers have? [18:44] We share our DSL connection with about 6 apartments [18:45] the person that was responsible for our DSL until now moved out last monday [18:45] i'd imagine it'd be along the lines of system or embedded stuff... not so much of the "Web 2.0" guys [18:45] my job title says "Embedded Hardware / Software Engineer" :) [18:46] nice! [18:46] basically it means i play code monkey for embedded software development [18:47] i work in C all day, but my job title says "Research Statistician" [18:47] i play with numeric algorithms and try to make them faster (i don't always succeed) [18:48] I'm a systems analyst, I wrangle unix boxes and networks for a living. [18:48] we run a fair bit of sassery here w0lf. [18:48] nice! [18:48] (being the Math and Stat Sci department) [18:49] hehe .. actually somewhat related to my job ... i am building the software that multiplexes the communication to a single serially connected measuring device over standard TCP/IP sockets [18:50] eventually this should involve algorithmic as well for things like things like grid state identification [18:51] grid here being "power grid" [18:52] do a good job, embedded tcp/ip stacks are notoriously easy to abuse [18:52] not that I'd ever abuse poor tcp/ip implementations or anything.. [18:52] * bvowk whistles innocently. [18:52] ha! [18:53] bvowk: currently our target platform is a little large still ... Linksys NSLU2 :) [18:54] so for the moment it's running SlugOS/LE|BE ... i want to see if i can get it to run a stripped down FreeBSD/arm eventually though [18:54] OpenBSD/arm would likely be a better [18:54] fit.. [18:55] perhaps ... but i can't stand OpenBSD [18:55] they've got a kickass tcp stack, and a really solid couple arm ports [18:55] why not? I know most of the dev lepers.. [18:56] it's the way they put their base system together [18:56] i mean Apache in the friggin Base System ... You've Got to be kidding me [18:56] heh.. [18:57] yeah, but when you consider that 3/4 of the unix boxes in the world are built to run apache, you might as well include a version that you've taken the time to secure nicely. [18:58] the OpenBSD crowd in my opinion is just Too paranoid [18:58] i am comfortable with FreeBSD ... and FreeSBD/arm has been seing very siginificant amounts of attention over the last year ... [18:59] I dunno about that, I've seen way too many machines being holed to fault them for their focus [19:00] It can be hard to get some code to run on their OS with all the security bells and whistles turned on because it catches so many little bugs that normally slide by. [19:02] i guess each of us has its own preferences .... OpenBSD just happens not to be one of mine :) [19:02] its true, I don't run openbsd on most of my stuff tho, if that says anything ;) [19:02] about about 70:30 [19:10] so you get to hack BSD for a living too then hey cael? [19:10] got commit bits? [20:25] bvowk: nah ... nothing close there [20:26] though i do want to start studying CS again starting this winter semester for the next 3 years and get myself a B.Sc [20:27] I am considering heading into the kernel-level programming direction as a focus point though [20:41] MSG: Quit: thanks for all the help!
