Took long enough to get here... [17:22] hi [17:22] Howdy [17:22] I've forgotten where the nano hill is... Mind giving me a hint? [17:22] sal.math.ualberta.ca [17:23] Thanks [17:32] hrm. [17:45] grts bvowk [17:45] whats up miz? [17:45] average [17:45] did you manage to lure an attractive woman back to the mizcu-cav [17:46] er.. miz-cave? [17:46] seems the project has been delayed [17:46] tragic. [17:46] i felt tired this morning, so i popped two caffeine-pills and lied down "just for a moment" [17:47] so it seems i am going to spend the whole night playing again [17:47] How's it going bvowk? [17:47] it goes alright. [17:48] Goot. [17:48] I don't recognize the nick Argi.. [17:50] It's from long ago... I played briefly on the hill., then went out of town all summer. [17:50] I see, it's familiar.. but I can't put a person to it ;) [17:50] good to have you back :) [17:50] Good to be here. Now I have to relearn all my redcode. :\ [17:52] its not so bad.. [17:52] although, I wouldn't know ;) [17:52] Join: Capn joined #corewars [17:52] hello hello [17:53] well, this is certainly interesting [17:53] indeed. [17:53] two of the newbs that popped just before summer arrive at same day [17:53] how's it going capn? [17:53] lmao really? not too bad, yourself? [17:54] I guess its back to school time :) [17:54] this is the first time i've actually had enought ime to get back into things [17:54] i graduated from high school and then started working like a mexican. i'm taking a year off of school befor going to university [17:55] i'm glad i wrote that idiot's guide. because now i can have some sense of what i'm doing [17:58] :) [17:59] so how is everyone doing? [17:59] enjoy that slack time after high school... it's fun, but it doesn't last long :( [17:59] I'm doing alright.. [17:59] I'm wondering if my new tiny stuff is hill worthy [18:00] attempting to fix an interrupt problem on one of my unix boxes :( [18:00] the network board keeps wedging for some inexplicable reason.. [18:01] well.. not inexplicable.. just no explanation I've found so far.. [18:01] haha [18:02] i'm thinking of dual-booting linux and windows XP but i'm not good enough at computers to use unix systems yet [18:02] my advice is to drop your windows for a while and use the unix exclusively.. [18:02] I wasn't as good as I could be until I did that.. [18:03] on the down side, I find windows boxes painfully limited to work on ;) [18:04] what do you mean? [18:04] and also there's compatibility issues with unix systems. like games, and such [18:09] Games? WHo needs games? Nethack and Corewars is all I need... [18:09] And corewars is sort of like the icing on the cake... [18:10] ha ha [18:10] Hmm, I see. Obviously not a Nethack player. <.< [18:11] nope [18:12] You should at least try it. It is in the /usr/local/games directory of every true sys admin. [18:12] corewars isn't like riding a bike, that's for sure [18:13] How true... [18:15] Hehe, I put my most recent nano warrior (From may, iirc,) up on the nano hill, and it's #22 against current warriors... It was in the top 3 for several iterations before it got pushed off. ;) [18:15] That was back in May though. [18:22] agreed.. nethack is all the game you need. [18:23] erm.. [18:23] except for corewars, which is more like a lifestyle choice ;) [18:23] lol [18:25] crap i'm looking at my old scanner and trying to figure out what goes on [18:27] ha ha [18:32] so does anyone on here play, or challenge themselves with, Notpron? [18:36] hm. cool. the old scanner i made a while ago places 7th on the beginner's hill.... [18:40] Join: Fluffy joined #corewars [18:40] fluffy! [18:40] :) [18:40] Fluffy. <.< [18:40] huh? [18:40] yeah. bummer [18:40] no, not really dead ... [18:40] ... yet [18:41] Did anything interesting happen during the last months? [18:41] ok, not that much then [18:42] apparnetly two noobs came back on the same day [18:43] bvowk: any progress with you evolver? [18:43] *your [18:44] (well, ive had some with mine, not much, but some) [18:45] which means that you don't have any good warriors, right? [18:45] i have one that is good by benchmark [18:46] fluffy: yeah, I've been making some progress.. [18:46] I'm still having problems convincing it to turn out anything but the same species of clear.. [18:47] but we're starting to make progress with that.. [18:47] *grmpf* Muddy Mouse is on Koenigstuhl, but I can't access its source :( [18:47] bvowk: we? [19:55] you might try turning your mutation rate down [19:55] if you're not getting anything but the hard to break patterns, you might have it too high [19:56] i switched the first-test warrior away from jmp $0, might help a little [19:59] well, currently i have 25% for each instruction in a warrior [20:01] you breeding and mutating? or just mutation? [20:02] just mutation [20:05] thats prolly not bad... [20:05] i am not planning to use self-regulating mutation rating [20:06] even though i already set the replacement-threshold such [20:10] well, now i got a.. [20:10] a.. [22:14] * bvowk passes a roll of paper towel [22:14] (unfortunate) [22:14] I'm just checking out core wars. Wanted to see if there was anything interesting going on here. [22:15] it's been pretty quiet lately, but we've had three newbies today.. [22:16] we're rapidly approaching newbie singularity at this rate, the newbies will utterly overflow the corewars group by the year 2200 at this rate. [22:16] Haha [22:16] I wouldn't worry too much, then. [22:17] Interesting game. [22:17] How long are most programs for it? [22:17] The few I've seen were under 10 instructions. [22:19] well, length is usually determined by the hill they're destined for.. [22:19] nano warriors are 5 lines long, whereas nop warriors are 100 lines long, and X warriors are 200 lines long.. [22:19] now, those are maximums, there's nothing that says you need to use them all [22:19] so they vary pretty widely.. [22:20] usually there'll be something called a qscan at the start, and then that will spawn the actual warrior after it runs.. [22:20] people usually re-use their qscans [22:21] I see. Sounds pretty involved, haha. [22:21] some warriors that use pspace will have a bunch of warrior types that some code selects based on the outcome of previous rounds.. [22:21] Are there still tournaments or is it mostly just people playing one on one? [22:22] there are tournaments that happen periodically, but you can submit to the hills at anytime.. [22:22] the warriors on the hills are the current cream of the crop, you can try to push them off. [22:24] (so basicly it's like playing against everyone currently on the hill) [22:25] Yeah, that sounds cool. [22:25] How often do you get submissions? [22:25] depends on the hill and the time of year etc.. [22:25] nano tends to get alot of submissions, because the short warriors are easy to crank out [22:26] some of the other hills like 94nop don't get quite as many hits because people tend to spend quite a bit of time polishing (optimizing) their warriors [22:27] but don't let that make you nervous.. the best way to get started is to write something and give it a go [22:27] Haha, alright. [22:27] if you've got problems, you can ask here, or rec.games.corewars [22:28] there's usually someone around :) [22:28] Sure, thanks :) [22:28] I'm not the best person to ask for redcode hints.. I don't actually write any.. I evolve [22:28] (so I'm not much help unless its a pretty trivial question!) [22:28] Yeah, I've read about some programs that do that. That sounds like a cool way to go about it. [22:29] Do most people do that or write them by hand? [22:29] most people write them by hand.. [22:29] but there are getting to be more evolvers [22:29] its alot more fun now that computers are fast enough to run a pile of simulations [22:32] whoa. [22:33] I'm wondering WTF I'm doing wrong all of a sudden, but it turns out I should pay more attention! [22:33] unknown.red was pushed off... (131.20) [22:33] >>> test.load_file("test.red") [22:33] >>> test.score_hill() [22:33] dettol487.red was pushed off... (130.06) [22:33] my warriors were making it on the hill! [22:34] I wasn't paying attention to the name and was wondering why my test warriors were suddenly doing *SO MUCH WORSE*! [22:35] thats kind of sad however, tells you how long its been since I made something that doesn't suck ;) [22:54] greetings from me too, orangegoo [22:55] Hey [22:55] So I'm looking at a tutorial now, and I have a easy question: what's A-space? [22:56] Oh, nevermind, haha. Failure to read. >_< [22:58] wow.. I actually have an evolved warrior that doesn't benefit from the trim.. [23:02] trim? as in pruning non-executed instructions? [23:02] yeah.. [23:02] it tries trimming instructions and stops when the score drops [23:15] Hill Age: 2 [23:15] 1 test.red 257.77 WTL% 81.3 13.8 4.9 1 [23:15] 2 whitenoise.red 148.94 WTL% 44.8 14.4 40.7 2 [23:15] I'm thinking perhaps thats not quite right. [23:15] perhaps [23:35] nope.. not perhaps.. [23:35] thats a really nifty fsckup. [23:51] http://sal.math.ualberta.ca/hill.php?key=tiny [23:51] not half bad. [23:51] too bad I had to kill my own warrior..
