I happened across the wiki article about corewar and wanted to see if the community was still active [01:06] Are people still coding and active? [01:06] more in hibernation, but yea, the community is still alive [01:06] people grow older faster than we get new members [01:07] Heh, I can imagine, this isn't something that piques everyone's interest [01:07] mostly because we dont advertise, secondly because you cant expect any kid of today to get interested -- nevermind.. (you seem to be from a Univ too..) [01:08] Yeah, Freshman year [01:10] I would imagine it would be harder for kids and students now to become interested in this kind of thing just because we don't need the experience that Corewar would build on to use computers in general [01:11] rather because it does not have flashy lights or 3d graphics, and it requires you to think [01:11] Heh, also true [01:12] How long have you been involved? [01:12] few years [01:15] so what kind of learning curve am i looking at with this? [01:17] some pick it up in a month, it took me half a year (with no proper programming background, though) [01:17] *nod* [01:18] do you know if pmars is compatable with vista? [01:19] yes, but youll might want to use corewin first [01:19] www.geocities.com/corewin2/ [01:19] Alright [01:23] so is the corewar community, the ones that are still active at least, kind of large? like over 100 people or is it dwindeling quickly? [01:25] less than 10 active, 10 semi-active, 20-30 lurkers [01:28] wow [01:28] the whole scene needs a kick in the ass [01:29] maybe resurrecting ICWS and making a '07 -standard would help [01:29] im sorry ICWS? [01:29] International Core War Society [01:30] group which help first tournaments and made the first proper standard [01:30] help -> held [01:30] ahh [01:32] how out of date are the current standards? [01:33] it was never 'modern' [01:33] the newest is '94 , which is still actually only a draft, because ICWS died out before making it official [01:33] oh [01:35] it stood up for 10 years before it began to lose its 'secrets' though [01:36] what do you mean by secrets? [01:36] well, new things that werent possible under '88, and warrior-types that didnt exists before [01:39] the 94 standard implemented new code? or something else that allowed people to code these new things? [01:39] it implemented a whole lot [01:40] ahh [01:40] what used to be an ordinary 'imp' was an MOV 0, 1 [01:40] ill tackle that after I learn the basics haha [01:40] *nod* [01:40] under '94 its Mov.i 0, 1 (which compiles into mov.i $0, $1) [01:41] three more addressing modes, and p-space [01:41] wow, sounds like quite a bit of change [01:42] (p-space remains the same between rounds for each warrior, except location 0 which tells what happened last round. Numbers only) [01:42] p-space is actually still quite unexplored, because it requires thinking on what happens between rounds [01:44] so this game seriously delves into computer science theory [01:44] well, in a single fight simple is efficient, so there are no really complex actions done on individual level [01:45] but there are some examples of 'group intelligence' (can i even use that wording? it makes it sound a lot more complex than it is) [01:46] heh [01:46] and when p-space is enabled, switching tactics can get really strange [01:47] hmm, sounds interesting [01:47] If I may ask, what is the median age do you think of the people involved in this game? [01:48] ermm... [01:48] i guess 26 [01:49] (Im 23) [01:49] ah, so I'm not too far off then [01:50] http://www.corewar.info/tournament/cwset2005/ has some profiles [01:55] Thank you so much for the info, you've been really helpful. I'm definitely going to idle around here and chat with some people, try to learn what I can [01:57] be advised that everything going on in here is logged and publicly available at www.koth.org/irc-logs/ [01:58] so you can drop a question and check if someone has answered it in the mean time (this in case you dont become a permanent idler) [02:00] and you can mail me at (logbot cleans off the email-addresses) [02:40] oh alright awesome, thank you very much [14:58] Join: OoS joined #corewars [14:58] Hi :-) [15:10] MSG: Ping timeout: 245 seconds [15:11] Join: OoS joined #corewars [15:16] MSG: Ping timeout: 245 seconds [17:50] Join: fiveop joined #corewars [19:49] Join: Metcalf joined #corewars [19:52] Join: OoS joined #corewars [19:53] MSG: Ping timeout: 245 seconds [19:53] "Ronald Reagan announces he has Alzheimer's.
