[00:36] oh great [00:36] at first i found a new ED at store, and then i get new country for my p2p-colletion (Uzbekistan) [00:38] thought this drink is the third one so far that i rate -- [00:44] Part: Mannerisk left #corewars [02:33] Join: baud joined #corewars [02:43] hi [02:46] hi [02:46] what is up? :o [02:47] not much [02:47] ic [02:47] been slow for a while, and Met is away for the weekend so it might be too [02:48] the Met? [02:48] Met = Metcalf, person behind corewar.co.uk [02:49] ah [02:49] I just learned about corewars today [02:49] well, the links in the topic might come in handy [02:49] high five! [02:49] and i am available for any questions you might get, most of the time [02:49] indeed, I am already looking at them [02:49] thanks ^_^ [02:50] I've been looking for something similar for a while, and found something called readytobattle in my ports, but that didn't really cut it. So then I looked around the google for a while and found this [02:56] I guess KOTH is the same thing as the ICSW or whatever? [02:57] not really, ICWS has been dead for a while as its last chairman didnt find a successor he liked [02:57] and ICWS tournaments were more ad-hoc events [02:58] okay [02:58] KOTH is one of the older hills that has gone through namechange (or two) [03:00] why are they called hills? [03:01] because they are big, somewhat unorganized battles were everybody try to beat others [03:01] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_of_the_Hill_(game) [03:01] indeed [03:02] lol [03:03] not exactly unorganized because the battles go in "i fight you then you then you" round-robin, since its kinda hard to determine the ability of a warrior in completely random enviroment [03:04] then there are multiwarrior-fights were everyone goes in the pool at once, and they are true clusterf*ks [03:08] I know a little C, and mostly use perl, is redcode going to be hard for me to learn? [03:09] I hear assembly languages are the worst, but they seem to have relatively few functions [03:12] MSG: Ping timeout: 245 seconds [03:18] Join: Mizcu joined #corewars [03:19] "Worlds top country in Information technology" [03:20] baud: neither C or Perl will help, but redcode is easier than x86 ASM too [03:20] indeed [03:21] I didn't think C or Perl would help, their syntax is way different [03:21] simply I was noting that I have, at best, minimal programming experience [03:21] itll take about a month to take redcode to the part where you can turn your toughts to code [03:22] thoughts [03:22] okay [03:22] that isn't too bad [03:22] making a good warrior? depends. Hurkyl did it in two months, took me more than a year. [03:23] indeed [03:23] like, I am going to try to get my room mate into this [03:23] and just use him for practice >:3 [03:29] how accurate is the rock/paper/scissors thing I keep reading about? [03:32] it is accurate to the point that you can estimate what a warrior consists of by watching how it scores [03:32] however, there are paper-killing stones and ive wroten a couple papers that cause huge havok with scissors [03:33] wroten -> written [03:34] so instead of "rock beats scissors beats paper beats rock" you get more of 2/3rd of time wins [03:35] and even less when enviroment gets more challenging [03:37] ic [03:40] you must've read about p-space for now [03:40] yes [03:41] in p-space enviroment people tend to intentionally emphasize the r/p/s analogy, because tactical switching is easier when results have less "static" [03:42] ah [03:42] in no-space warriors have more emphasis in one warrior being able to take on many type of opponents, because you will meet warriors that you are in disadvantage of [03:46] (no-pspace, that is, aka the 94' NOP -hill at koth) [03:54] should I learn redcode 88 and then 94? [03:55] well, for your, say, first 5-10 warriors, go with 88 [03:55] okay [03:56] I assume 94 doesn't change the syntax or anything much [03:57] it doesnt add anything that would requrie another chapter in a schoolbook, but it will allow a lot more trickery [03:57] indeed [03:59] well, p-space would be another chapter, but p-space has been slightly out of fashion because of the complicacy that the switching added [04:02] i thought p-space is too complicated for me before i understood how P^3-switcher worked and now its easy as long as i dont try to pull special tricks [04:04] indeed [04:06] I have basically done everything but read up on redcode, which I am avoiding because I am lazy lol [04:14] MSG: Ping timeout: 245 seconds [04:52] Join: Mizcu joined #corewars [04:54] welcome back [04:56] damn my isp [04:56] indeed [04:57] it wouldnt be that bad if it wasnt for the fact that i have a 1 to 2 second lag to my bouncer [04:58] which is about 50cm away from my main 'puter [04:58] ah [04:58] because my isp thinks its fun to route the traffic through Helsinki [05:00] lol [06:33] Join: Mannerisk joined #corewars [06:34] there, my energy drink -collection has been re-arranged.
